The Benefits of Coloring Books
Coloring has become a therapeutic way for children and adults to decompress from the rigors of living in a busy world. Coloring can:
1. alleviate boredom
2. encourage creativity
3. teach new concepts
Coloring books have become an excellent gift for anyone at any age.
My dad had dementia for over ten years. During that time, his life was enriched by the many coloring books my mom and I bought for him. When the disease became so advanced that he could no longer work on crossword puzzles, coloring was his comfort and pastime. I can still remember watching him sort through his sets of brilliant pencils as he busily filled in page after page of flowers, birds, animals, and geometric designs.
I guess that may be part of the reason why I felt compelled to make one, using the things I know how to draw. You can see it here.
I wanted to honor his memory, and I wanted people who may be in the hospital or in residential care to be able to have something that inspires them and gives a boost to their quality of life.
I also wanted to take some of the ideas I have and commit them to print for future generations. Themes like love, patience, and generosity are things I try to communicate through my characters and artwork.
